Meet our Muse

As we start this next chapter of SAOLA, we put to rest our original logo and start afresh with a new icon that more accurately represents our story. Our new logo – an abstract take on the saola’s head – is more than a logo. It represents our reason for being. Let’s back up for a minute…

As we start this next chapter of SAOLA, we put to rest our original logo and start afresh with a new icon that more accurately represents our story. Our new logo – an abstract take on the saola’s head – is more than a logo. It represents our reason for being. Let’s back up for a minute…

The discovery of the saola is a fascinating tale of science, surprise, and serendipity. In the early 1990s, a groundbreaking discovery was made in the dense, untouched forests of the Annamite Range, straddling Vietnam and Laos. The saola was unknown to Western science until scientists stumbled upon a pair of unusual horns in a local hunter’s home. These horns, unlike any known to science, hinted at the existence of an unseen species.

Intrigued and puzzled by this find, the team set out to uncover the mystery behind these peculiar horns. The scientists spent weeks trekking through dense forests and challenging terrain, interviewing locals, and piecing together the sparse information available. Finally, the team discovered a saola specimen.

The discovery of the saola was a significant event for several reasons. Firstly, it's rare for a large mammal to be discovered in modern times, making the saola an extraordinary find. Secondly, the discovery highlighted the rich biodiversity of the region and the importance of preserving its unique habitats. This brought international attention to the region and spurred increased conservation efforts. However, the saola remains critically endangered, with unknown, but very low, numbers surviving in the wild. They continue to be threatened by habitat destruction and illegal poaching.

The story of the enigmatic saola, from discovery to its current state, struck us as both an inspirational story of hope, and a grave reminder of the fragile state of our eco-system. It is why we donate a portion of our proceeds to wildlife conservation, supporting organizations committed to rescuing, caring, and rewilding animals.
